General

The Multi Protocol Interface (MPI) allows your computer to communicate with modules using appropriate protocol and wiring.  The MPI translates the different module protocols and signals into a standard RS-232 based protocol that is suitable for your personal computer.

Hardware

The MPI includes 2 communication connectors and one power jack located on the back panel of the box (see figure below).  On top, there is a DESS® key housing and three status LEDS.  The following table lists the MPI hardware components:

Component

 Description

Serial port

Connects the MPI to your computer (computer icon).

Diagnostic port

Connects the MPI to the vehicle (engine icon).

Power jack

Connects the MPI into a domestic power outlet.

Internal battery pack

Four AA batteries located underneath the MPI.

DESS key housing

Allows you to program DESS keys.

ON LED

Indicates that the MPI is powered.  The LED blinks when the MPI is powered by the internal battery pack.
